GoneCamper Minivan Camper Road Trip To Saguaro National Park

A GoneCamper minivan camper allows you to travel economically and eliminate motel expenses!

We recently traveled to the Tucson area to visit the Saguaro National Park. This park is actually divided into two sections, east and west of Tucson. We stopped first at the Visitor's Center in the western park section. After a brief video that explained the significance of the saguaro to the Native inhabitants of the desert, we left for a tour of the park on an unpaved road.

There were a few picnic areas to choose from, but all were crowded with thousands of people touring the park and enjoying the Spring bloom. Shortly we came to an intersection with a dead end road leading off to the East. Taking the road we soon found an empty picnic area, complete with massive stone picnic shelters to overcome the intense midday sun.

The hilltop shelter had a great view and a steady, cooling breeze. We were amazed to have the whole area to ourselves, but many people were intimidated to take the dead end road. NONE of the loop road would have been any fun in a motor home, even a "mini" motor home! And vehicles with trailers would not be allowed.

After lunch, we stopped at a rock outcropping that held Native American pictographs. Again, the gravel roads and tight parking area would never accommodate larger vehicles.

Following our tour of the Park, we decided to take a side trip to the top of Mt. Lemon, which has a ski area at 10,000 feet right on the outskirts of Tucson. We drove to the top and found a little snow hanging on in the Spring 70-degree heat.

After driving back down the mountain, we returned to the edge of Saguaro National Park to a campground managed by Pinal County. We wanted a campsite as close as possible to the park and the Sonoran Desert Museum, which we planned to tour first thing in the cooler temperatures of morning.
