Randy's Sharpening Techniques
Randy uses a variety of techniques and types of equipment to sharpen your knives and tools. Most of the equipment has been modified or built by Randy to produce unmatched super sharp edges!

The equipment and sharpening techniques depend on:
1. The condition of the edge on the knife or tool.
2. The intended use for the knife or tool.
Sometimes a knife has a blade with a proper bevel and cutting edge - it is just "dull". In fact, the sharp edge may have "rolled over". In this case honing may be all that is required to restore the razor edge.
Most often, a new secondary bevel - the actual cutting edge - must be formed, sharpened and honed.

Sometimes a brand new knife has a horrible edge that was produced by a stamping process in the factory. Like an old, dull knife these brand new knives must be correctly sharpened.

The SUPER sharp cutting edge is the goal, but the proper bevel of the edge will depend on how the knife - or tool - is to be used. A different bevel is required for slicing than chopping. A different edge is required for cutting meat than tomatoes or wood. Depending on the intended use, Randy can create a new and more efficient bevel, if required.
Most sharpening processes include multiple machines and techniques. Your knives may receive a new bevel on a slow-turning water wheel whetstone, then be sharpened on a 1000-grit belt before being honed by hand on a ceramic rod. Randy also uses buffing wheels, leather strops, and fine diamond abrasives to produce a superior edge that lasts!

Most importantly, Randy will also TEACH you how to maintain the edge on your knives and tools. With proper care and periodic honing, many knives may only require sharpening once per year. Randy can supply your kitchen or workshop with hones that will help you maintain the super sharp edges!

Finally, Randy's sharpening service is not complete until the handle of the knife has been reconditioned, all rust and tarnish has been removed from the blade, and the lock and pivot of the folding knife has been cleaned and lubricated.
