Randy has been sharpening knives for over 50 years – since he got his first Boy Scout pocket knife. Those first knives were sharpened on a crude whetstone, and not a few cuts resulted from improper use and poor sharpening techniques.

Randy's education in knife sharpening advanced rapidly when he became a big game hunter. The best venison comes from animals that are field dressed quickly and then processed correctly. It takes a sharp knife to field dress a large deer, bear or wild boar. A dull knife is very dangerous in the field. Then it takes several sharp knives - or several sharpening sessions - to correctly quarter a carcass and bone out the various cuts of meat.

At home, Randy also learned that expensive cuts of meat or a perfectly prepared Thanksgiving turkey require perfectly sharpened knives to make cuts effortless and precise. Sharpening kitchen knives to perfection - and maintaining this super-sharp edge has become a lifelong quest for Randy.

Randy's sharpening skills have been refined over the years. His skills for sharpening all types of edges has also advanced through diligent study, mentorship and practice. His sharpening methods have also advanced tremendously from that first coarse whetstone. Today Randy uses slow-speed water honing wheels, precision belt grinders, honing disks, diamond stones, and man-made ceramic sharpeners for the finest edges. Most of Randy's sharpening machinery has been modified or built by Randy to provide unmatched results.
